Though working in different media, these artists’ interest in what is considered “mundane” or “less than significant” speaks of an aesthetic that is integral to the world we inhabit.
<p style="box-sizing: border-box; caret-color: rgb(35, 52, 82); color: #233452; font-family: "Open Sans"; font-size: 16px; margin: 0px 0px 20px;">For many years Coleman’s work has focused on drawing and painting within the open-ended theme of landscape, which provides many points of departure and return. Dyas, with camera in hand, has made photographs about her surroundings, capturing and constructing images of both place and people for over thirty years. The duo are Lecturers in Art at Cornell College. Dyas teaches photography, video and performance art. Coleman teaches drawing, 2D studio, and serves as Gallery Coordinator.
<p style="box-sizing: border-box; caret-color: rgb(35, 52, 82); color: #233452; font-family: "Open Sans"; font-size: 16px; margin: 0px 0px 20px;">WATERLOO CENTER FOR THE ARTS

<div class="separator" style="clear: both;

Lost in the Midwest began in 2008 and continues. It is photographic work about living in the Midwest, how landscape informs who you become over time. Intuitively I search for cultural landscapes that have a strong sense of place. Finding poetic beauty in the everyday through close observation of the cultural landscape is my central vision.

I am interested in people and the traces we leave behind, the ghosts that inhibit a place. Wim Wenders, an important German filmmaker and photographer has said he believes landscapes tell us stories about who we are if we take the time to listen. Another philosophical influence of mine is Rebecca Solnit, a writer who believes we must “leave the door open for the unknown” because that is where the “most important things come from, where you yourself came from, and where you will go.”

In the end, all I have in this world are the experiences I encounter with people, animals and the landscape. Using a camera, I can document time passing; my photographs are a testament to my life here and now.

“There’s a place I always go… the tangled, messy border where human and nature collide and collude. Edgeland.” – NYTimes writer Rob Cowen

This idea of Edgelands – that space between city and country, wild and tamed, was the inspiration for this fifth edition of the Elemental series. For this topic we asked Catherine Pancake, a US-based sound designer and composer, to create an original soundscape based on the idea of Edgelands. Using Catherine’s piece as the starting point, we each created a video interpretation to accompany the sound- one more narrative, the other more experimental- yet both walking that imaginary line.
