LENSCRATCH is Aline Smithson's photography blog. Talented and well-known photographer Aline is also a blogger who helps to promote other photographers' work. Jeffrey Foucault - Musician Extraordinaire

Friday night we went to CSPS in Cedar Rapids (in the Czech village) to hear Jeffrey Foucault perform. He sounded so good - way beyond words. And second set his good friend Dave Moore sat in and played his harmonica and accordion. The whole experience of listening to them collaborate and make music was wonderful. In addition, CSPS is brand new. Following the flooding in 2008, CSPS was down but not anymore! It is back and in the finest condition. They now have a small bar with tasty deliciousness....beer and wine. Nice brews to compliment the fine evening you will have.

I have some tiny pics to add from the actual performance - and I made some videos too. But what I have ready to go is one of the images from the NEXT day. On Saturday Jeffrey and I spent a few hours doing a photo shoot. Yes, it was COLD outside. We did some in my make-shift studio and some out at Dave and Lysa Moore's cool cabin on the river. All good. Here is one I especially like from inside my house.

My friend Ed Maxin (Easy Ed) writes a blog - on No Depression's site. He posted this review today - November 28, 2011. Gotta read it! Kelly Pardekooper -my good friend and musician, former Iowa Citian and now living in LA has a new record out called YONDER. My friend Gene Flores did the cover art - and boy it is beautiful!!! I just got the new record --- and know I will love it --- gotta pop it in the cd player for the car ride back and forth to Mount Vernon --- teaching photography this month. Keep making music Kelly! Sorry to have missed your show at the Englert this last holiday week. Just too much on my plate...being it was Thanksgiving... I was with my family on the farm in Jackson County.

Hanno Hardt, Professor, Photographer, Scholar

Tonight I found out that my friend Hanno Hardt passed away on October 11th. I am profoundly saddened by this news. Hanno was an inspiration to me while a student at the University of Iowa. Hans Breder and Hanno were friends and I was in Hans' Intermedia program.

Hanno Hardt loved black and white documentary photography. He loved Iowa. "A Time in Iowa" is a book he self-published in 2007. He has self-published a great number of photography books on Blurb.

I still have my notes from his class. We talked about the media. Film, photography, TV. My paper was about Woody Allen and all the controversies surrounding him at that time. I still have that paper. Later, Hanno served as a member on my MFA committee. I appreciated his support of my work.

Over the years, we stayed loosely connected. He wrote an invitation for me to teach and research at the University of Ljubljana last year and again this year. Hanno wanted me to help assist him teach photography and video at the university. He believed in me and in my work as an artist. Hanno Hardt was an incredibly smart and creative thinking man. He was also very generous and kind. I hoped I would see him again...this time in Slovenia.

There will be a memorial for him at the MILL in Iowa City on November 4th from 4pm - 7pm.

In early March 2011, Katie Roche and her daughter Stella agreed to work with me to make new portraits. I wanted to photograph Katie again...this time she was/is still....pregnant. The stark landscape in the backyard of their home in Iowa City became an important part of this portrait. Life is coming...it is nearly spring.... Portraits are always a collaboration for me. It was a brief shoot -- life moves so quickly -- I always feel very lucky I am invited into someone's home to make their portrait. Thank you Katie and Stella. "I’m taking a two week trip in April. There’s a great song by Little Feat called Willin’. There’s a line in the song that goes “I’ve been from Tucson to Tucumcari, Tehachapi to Tonopah” so that’s what I’m going to do. I’ll fly to Tucson, take in all of the places mentioned in the song as well as many more, and make my way back to Tucson again. I expect to cover at least 3,500 miles on the trip. I’ll hope to come across beautiful and interesting things but I won’t be shooting too much as my camera takes only 10 frames per roll."

In 2009, I started a new portrait project. Just recently I decided on a title for the work - Lost in the Midwest. This work is about the unknown. It is about finding oneself and at the same time, losing oneself. Rebecca Solnit writes in her book A Field Guide to Getting Lost that we should celebrate the unknown rather than fear it. Losing things, losing ourselves, is part of our human experience. Instead we want control over our lives and this severely limits discovery and knowledge.

The Midwest is often times overlooked or missed entirely. Geographically we are in-between. People from either coast tend to just fly over us. This body of work will explore the complexities of life in the Midwest. The portraits I am interested in making are one on one and collaborative. I do not have a fixed idea before I begin. There is my subject, the lighting and the environment. I go by feel. I do not have a road map. The elements must come together and inspire me to shoot the photograph.

More than anything I am fascinated with people. I want to convey something deeper about my subjects than mere documentation. It is my intent for this work to reveal a tiny bit of the unspoken, the poetic, the immense mystery of being human. Curiosity pushes me to ask permission to photograph someone. My camera gives me a certain license to go inside, to reach beyond the surface.

I made these portraits recently of Tom Caufield and his dog, Norman Judd. I am very happy with the photographs and Tom likes them too. What I like best is that I think we captured a real essence --something very beautiful and real -- about who Tom is and also about his relationship with Norman Judd. And it got me thinking about the people I am photographing....some have been Iowans since birth - like me - but many of my subjects/friends are people who have moved to Iowa or the Midwest and made it their home. They uprooted and transplanted themselves. They adapted to being midwesterners. More to think about...how this landscape forms and informs who we are and who we become.

Bluebirds was accepted into the Paducah Photo 2010 exhibition at the Yeiser Art Center in Paducah, Kentucky. Show dates are June 19 - July 24th. The show was juried by Michael Johnson, Professor of Art at Murray State University and Director of “Magic Silver”, one of the largest international juried photography exhibitions. In early March, I flew to Philadelphia to go to the SPE conference. I stayed with my friends LeAnn & Julie. They were the perfect hostesses - I loved seeing the city! If you go there - go to the Magic Gardens, go see Duchamp's works at the Art Museum and eat some great food at the Reading Terminal/Market right downtown!

This past weekend I shot some photos of James Offutt. He is graduating from high school (City High) early. I have known James since he was born. The photo of him called James and the Pronghorn was taken quite a few years ago. The shoot we did is why I love being a photographer. It is really something being able to be allowed to be so intimately into someone's life. James is an amazing young man. Time moves so quickly.
