The year of Elemental
“There’s a place I always go… the tangled, messy border where human and nature collide and collude. Edgeland.” – NYTimes writer Rob Cowen
This idea of Edgelands – that space between city and country, wild and tamed, was the inspiration for this fifth edition of the Elemental series. For this topic we asked Catherine Pancake, a US-based sound designer and composer, to create an original soundscape based on the idea of Edgelands. Using Catherine’s piece as the starting point, we each created a video interpretation to accompany the sound- one more narrative, the other more experimental- yet both walking that imaginary line.

Elemental: Eclipse from Homegrown Stories
On August 21, 2017 a momentous astronomical event took place in the US, a total eclipse of the sun. The year of Elemental marked this event by asking French sound designer Patrick de Caumette to create an original sound composition. With eclipse footage supplied by Derek Muller and John D. Boswell, Sandy and LeAnn took wide inspiration from the word and phenomenon of eclipse.
Videographers: Sandra Louise Dyas, LeAnn Erickson, Derek Muller with John D. Boswell.
Derek Muller is Veritasium
John D. Boswell is Symphony of Science

Elisa Korenne Revisited
I recently received a picture postcard in the mail from my musician friend up in Minnesota about her new memoir called ---
Hundred Miles to Nowhere; An Unlikely Love Story.
Her name is Elisa Korenne. Way back in 2010, we did a day-long photo shoot up in her neck of the woods, Northern Minnesota. I was reminded of the day when I received the card with a photo from that day.
I decided to revisit the photographs we made and was surprised by how many I still really like and even some I had not considered before. I wish I did more of these kind of creative and wide open shoots!

The year of Elemental - Homegrown Stories
As the year of Elemental continues, our third sound artist, Ng Chor Guan, chose the prompt Sense as his inspiration. Perception is defined as the ability to see, hear, or become aware of something through the senses. Using the prompt and Guan’s haunting soundtrack, we each created separate videos, yet both pieces share a number of visual themes.

The Year of the Elemental - Homegrown Stories Blog
This month we collaborated with GEORGE HIGGS, a sound artist/composer based in Dublin, Ireland. Using the umbrella prompt of Elemental, his light, yet haunting composition led LeAnn Erickson and myself to choose Dreaming as our sub-prompt.

HOMEGROWN STORIES -- The Year of ELEMENTAL
During the 2017 calendar year, Sandy Dyas and LeAnn Erickson will be pushing the collaborative mission of Homegrown Stories by seeking out international artists to complete stand-alone sound art pieces that will be paired with their independently created video pieces.
Using the umbrella theme of Elemental, the collaborators will use a focused prompt as creative inspiration. The goal of Elemental is to push the creative exploration of place and space through the development of a global collaborative effort.
The first Elemental collaboration was with the sound artist Lloyd Dunn.LLOYD DUNN IS A TAPE BEATLE AND SOUND ARTIST WHO CURRENTLY IS LIVING IN PRAGUE.
Here is our first collaboration of the new year - 2017 -- Go to Homegrown Stories --
Elemental: AIR is a collaborative work using an ominous sound track created by Lloyd Dunn, an artist and friend living in Prague. The footage was shot on the farm I grew up on in Eastern Iowa. This experimental, dark video was highly influenced by Dunn’s eerie sound track as well as my post-election mood.
