LOST IN THE MIDWEST - SANDRA LOUISE DYAS: PHOTOGRAPHS AND VIDEO
Show Opening Reception is June 1st, 5-8pm
with music by Dave Moore
Lost in the Midwest began in 2008 and continues. It is photographic work about living in the Midwest, how landscape informs who you become over time. Intuitively I search for cultural landscapes that have a strong sense of place. Finding poetic beauty in the everyday through close observation of the cultural landscape is my central vision.
I am interested in people and the traces we leave behind, the ghosts that inhibit a place. Wim Wenders, an important German filmmaker and photographer has said he believes landscapes tell us stories about who we are if we take the time to listen. Another philosophical influence of mine is Rebecca Solnit, a writer who believes we must “leave the door open for the unknown” because that is where the “most important things come from, where you yourself came from, and where you will go.”
In the end, all I have in this world are the experiences I encounter with people, animals and the landscape. Using a camera, I can document time passing; my photographs are a testament to my life here and now.
